Donald Trump is the greatest debater in the world…according to Donald Trump. So, he has said he will DEFINITELY debate Hillary Clinton this fall, but he wants to set the rules.
Presidential debates are not organized by the democrats or the republicans. They are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates, and have been since 1988. The bipartisan commission sets the dates, selects the moderators, and adjusts the rules within a narrow format that has remained the same for 30 years. Two of the debates are long-form responses on questions from a moderator. The other is a town hall format.
Hillary Clinton has agreed to appear at all three of this year’s scheduled debates. Of course she has.
Donald Trump says he will also commit to three debates … so long as he gets to set the dates, change the rules, and change the moderators if he doesn’t like them.
Speaking to Time Magazine, Trump said, “I will absolutely do three debates. I want to debate very badly. But I have to see the conditions.”
There are three presidential debates scheduled, Sept. 26th in Hempstead, N.Y.; Oct. 9th in St. Louis; and Oct. 19th in Las Vegas. There is one vice-presidential debate in Farmville, Va., on Oct. 4th.
Trump said, “I renegotiated the debates in the primaries, remember? They were making a fortune on them and they had us in for three and a half hours and I said that’s ridiculous. I’m sure they’ll be open to any suggestions I have, because I think they’ll be very fair suggestions. But I haven’t seen the conditions yet. They’re actually presented to me tonight.”
About the moderators, Trump said, “I’ll have to see who the moderators are. Yeah, I would say that certain moderators would be unacceptable, absolutely. I did very well in the debates on the primaries. According to the polls, I won all of them. So I look forward to the debates. But, yeah, I want to have fair moderators … I will demand fair moderators.”
They will not change the rules for Trump, and Trump will lose (bigly) and he will use it as fodder in his campaign to position this election as “rigged”.
