Yes, today Donald Trump admitted that President Obama was born in the United States, after 5 years of being a “birther”, meaning Trump has asserted that Obama was born overseas (particularly in Kenya), and therefore was not a legitimate president.
However, if Trump thought everyone would fawn all over his so-called “apology”, he was sorely mistaken.
First, Trump showed up an hour late for the press conference, which gave him extra coverage.
Second, he held the event at his new DC hotel, the Trump International Hotel, and the spent several minutes telling everyone how great it is. In effect, he conned the press into giving him a free, nationwide commercial for his hotel.
Third, he spent 20 minutes introducing a bunch of military folks who were endorsing him.
And finally, at the end of his long speech, he gave a ten-second statement acknowledging that Barack Obama was born in the US. Mind you, he never APOLOGIZED. He just made the statement…period.
Trump said, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period. Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.”
Then he walked off without taking any questions.
So far, the reaction of the press corps has been scathing. It was a bait-and-switch. They got played. They didn’t get to ask any questions, which they were led to believe they could. It was slated as a press conference, not a speech where Trump promoted himself and his new hotel.
The press is p*ssed off, and the public is extremely disappointed.
