NEWS ALERT: No, Hillary Clinton Did NOT Laugh About Getting A Child Rapist A Lighter Sentence (VIDEO)

As Donald Trump’s campaign continues to self implode, Trump is bringing out women that he claims have been victimized by either Bill or Hillary Clinton. One of these women is Kathy Shelton.

There is a meme that is spreading like wildfire through conservative sites, Facebook, and with anyone who hates Hillary Clinton. It’s a meme of a young girl, who is purported to be Kathy Shelton, with the words:

“In 1975 when I was 12, I was raped by a 42 year old man. Hillary Clinton volunteered to be his lawyer. In court, Hillary Clinton told the judge that I made up the rape story because I fantasized about being with older men. Hillary got my rapist freed. In 1980 she gave an interview where she admitted she knew he was guilty. And she laughed about it.”

Outside of the first line, every statement in this meme is patently false.

In this country, all defendants have a constitutional right to an attorney. Hillary Clinton at the time was a practicing attorney. In 1975, a young Hillary Clinton was requested as lawyer for the defense in a rape case involving a 12-year-old girl; Clinton reluctantly took on the case, successfully challenged mismanaged evidence, and entered a plea bargain for the defendant. in the end, Taylor’s charges were reduced from first-degree rape to “unlawful fondling of a child under 14,” mainly due to a lack of credible evidence in the case. Taylor served 10 months of a one-year sentence, and died in 1992.

So basically, she did her job. She did the job she was supposed to do. Rapists, murderers, child molesters, etc., all have a right to counsel, period.

In May of 1975, Rodham was still seven months away from her wedding to Bill Clinton, and had only recently moved to her fiancée’s home state of Arkansas where he planned to run for office. She took a teaching position at the University of Arkansas law school and quickly took the initiative to found the University of Arkansas School Legal Aid Clinic.

Because the legal aid clinic provided representation for clients who could not afford a lawyer, in the frequent instances when public defenders could not handle their heavy caseload.

When Taylor told the judge in his case that he demanded a woman lawyer, firing his court-appointed male attorney, prosecutors turned to Rodham, recommending her to the judge in the case.

Clinton wrote about the case in her 2003 memoir Living History, saying that she desperately tried to get out of the assignment.

“I really didn’t feel comfortable taking on such a client, but (Prosecutor) Mahlon (Gibson) gently reminded me that I couldn’t very well refuse the judge’s request,” Clinton wrote.

Gibson, in a CNN interview 11 years after Clinton published her book, remembered the young lawyer’s reaction the same way.

“I don’t want to represent this guy. I just can’t stand this,” Gibson recalled Clinton pleading with him. “I don’t want to get involved. Can you get me off?”

Gibson suggested that she take her pleas to the judge, which Clinton did. But the judge was unsympathetic, ordering her to take Taylor’s case.

Clinton did long ago give an interview about the case, and you can hear the audio yourself. The interview was conducted sometime in the mid-1980’s by Arkansas reporter, Roy Reed. Clinton described the case as terrible, and that it had forever destroyed her confidence in polygraph testing. Immediately afterwards, Clinton was described as “laughing,” but the laughter was in apparent response to what she believed was unreliable polygraphs, saying, “He took a polygraph test! I had him take a polygraph which he passed, which forever destroyed my faith in polygraphs (laughter).”

Clinton is not laughing that she “got the molester off”. She didn’t…she entered a plea deal, and he was sentenced to a year in jail and four years of probation. She laughs about the efficacy of polygraphs, saying that since the polygraph proved her client innocent, she didn’t believe in them anymore.

Seeing memes like this spread drives me crazy, because they are simply NOT TRUE, but many immediately believe them and continue to spread the lies.
