In Trump’s America, bigotry runs rampant, especially in the South where some citizens still believe the Civil War is being fought.
The Noth Carolina KKK group, Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, traveled fifty deep to Charlottesville, VA to protest the removal of the Robert E. Lee statue from a park.
Before their arrival, several Klansmen claimed that they would be carrying firearms during the protest, which is allowed under Virgina’s open-carry law.
What the Klansmen didn’t expect was the massive group of counter protestors awaiting their arrival. A large group of police, including state police, had to escort members of the Klan to their designated spot in Justice Park.
According to city spokeswoman Miriam Dickler, there were roughly 1,000 counter protestors compared to the Klan’s fifty members. Members of the larger group shouted, “racists go home.” The Klansmen fired back with their customary “white power” chant.
The police allowed the KKK forty minutes before escorting them back to their cars. Counter protestors attempted to block their path. A few scuffles broke out as a result. The police deemed the group of counter protestors an unlawful assembly, Dickler added.
The Klansmen ultimately left after disturbing the peace.
