When Trump first named Gen. John Kelly his new Chief of Staff, most Americans thought he’d be a good influence on the president. Over the past month, Kelly has proven the complete opposite to be true. Kelly’s xenophobia just forced Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Elaine Duke to resign.
Kelly demanded she deports tens of thousands of Honduras citizens who are living in America under the protected status of hurricane refugees. After meeting Kelly in his office, Duke decided to resign as a form of protest against such bigotry, according to the Washington Post.
Via The Post:
“Duke refused to reverse her decision and was angered by what she felt was a politically driven intrusion by Kelly and Tom Bossert, the White House homeland security adviser, who also called her about the matter.”
The report says Duke “has informed Kelly she plans to resign” over the way he handled the situation.
The Honduran citizens have lived in America for roughly two decades. Duke knows that abruptly sending them back to Honduras would be an inhumane move. She couldn’t sink down to the heartlessness of a xenophobe and kick out families who have made America their home.
