At least 37 people are dead and more than 1,000 injured after an attempt by Palestinians to cross the border from Gaza to Israel.
The Health Ministry in Gaza, has the death toll officially marked at 37.
Violent acts of protests along the border have been occurring for weeks but appeared to spike ahead of the scheduled opening on Monday of the new U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.
President Trump chose to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, a dangerous action opposed by other nations given the disputed status of Jerusalem, which both Israel and Palestinians consider their capital.
Israeli troops attempting to keep Palestinians out of Israel made use of tear gas and live ammunition to keep Palestinians from scaling a fence across the border.
Video shows several groups of protesters looking to cross. Reports indicated many children were among those fatally wounded.
Israelis revealed that many in the crowds were throwing explosives or flying flaming kites into Israel, according to the Times.
“Even if the fence is breached, we will be able to protect Israeli civilians from attempts to massacre or kidnap or kill them,” a spokesman for Israel’s military, Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, told the AP.
Trump’s decision to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem left Palestinians stating that the United States could no longer consider itself a peacemaker.
President Trump seemed completely unphased by the massacres as he celebrated the event:
Big day for Israel. Congratulations!
