When a human being is diagnosed with a deadly form of cancer, the typical human response is one of sympathy. However, in the age of Trump, so-called conservative nationalism has never been quite so vile.
Yesterday, former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) underwent surgery after receiving a pancreatic cancer diagnosis – a type of cancer that typically takes its victim’s life. The longtime senator had recently returned to his home in Nevada due to an eye injury, and Democrat Catherine Cortez-Masto replaced him.
“Senator Reid is no stranger to a fight. He beat his opponents in the boxing ring, took on the mob in Nevada, and moved bills in the Senate that no one believed could be done. He’ll beat cancer too. I wish him a speedy and successful recovery.”
One source told Nevada Independent, “They caught it early. The doctors believe it went well, and he is expected to make a full recovery.”
Republican Sen. John McCain, who is battling a deadly form of brain cancer, sent Reid the following message:
“From one cantankerous senator to another, sending my prayers & best wishes to @SenatorReid as he recovers from a successful surgery”

Reid’s family released the following statement:
“Today, Former Democratic Leader Harry Reid underwent surgery at Johns Hopkins Cancer Center to remove a tumor from his pancreas. His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good. He will undergo chemotherapy as the next step in his treatment. He is now out of surgery, in good spirits and resting with his family. He is grateful to his highly skilled team of doctors and to all who have sent and continue to send their love and support.”
